Kids' Guernica at the Museum of President Jacques Chirac in France

June 2012   Within the framework of the exhibition Guernica at the museum of President Jacques Chirac, we proposed works of plastic art to the pupils of the Corrèze.from February till April, 2012.About 300 pupils collaborated to this educational project. In the term of these works, 258 children's works around the theme of the peace were created. During 4 days, pupils realized the last phase of the project by realizing a fresco in the size of the original board of Pablo Picasso.

In September, 2012, the monumental work will circulate in schools having participated in this project in Corrèze.

Kids' Guernica at Helene Lange School in Mannheim, Germany

The young artists“ of the Helene-Lange-School have created in an exciting process step by step their joint peace mural. Since May 18 students from various classes have been working on this project. They stayed behind after school and even came Saturdays to the school, in order to complete the painting.
On 20th of June the mural was presented during an official ceremony in the court yard of the school to all.
At the same time, the sister school of the Helene Lange School, namely the village school „Miracles de Yahvé“ in Togo, have started with their preparations. The plan is to have the students there paint as well their peace mural. Since canvas and paints do cost a lot of money, the Helene Lange School intends to collect money for this purpose. It would be the first Kids' Guernica mural to be painted in Africa, and the children of this African school would have for the first time the opportunity to get to know the use of colours.
The aim is to have both murals be exhibited one day together with other murals during a Kids' Guernica event. The Kids' Guernica murals go very often on trips, in order to be exhibited in different parts of the world. Since the canvas can be easily rolled together, they can be transported easily as part of the baggage one takes with oneself anyhow.

Kids' Guernica in Tübingen, Germany

The Kids’ Guernica workshop in Tübingen was organized by a group of

young people who worked on a honorary basis to advance youth culture.
The project startet in May 2011 at three primary schools and ended with
a 3-day-festival on a central marketplace in the middle of Tübingen. A
complete program was created by the youth (see www.jukuta.de)
Before that, a group of children painted a special mural linked to
Kids' Guernica, and to which they were introduced by the organizer and
artist Ines Dulay-Winkler. She was assisted by her team of young people

who are all very active within peace development. They talked with the

children about peace and war, explained the Guernica’s history, and
referred to the history of Tübingen. Of course, these talks included
instructions about different painting techniques. After that the

children started to paint

Kids’ Guernica in Tübingen was created by 28 children (age 6-20 years).
The mural depicts a kids interpretation of the original Pablo Picasso’s

Kid’s Guernica at Mater Sagrado Corazón, Monterrey in Mexico

“I’m the main piece of peace: AND YOU?”

We, Sofía Dávila and Marcela Govea, ESL teachers, worked with 6th grade elementary students reading extraordinary people biographies and how courage and imagination can be linked to actually do something about the world we live in.

Nowadays Mexico, and specially the city we live in, Monterrey, is suffering of a lot of violence and we at Mater Sagrado Corazón, as part of the Sacred Heart Society, are concerned about working toward justice and peace in the world. We seek for Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) in every way of our lives, understanding the reality in the world today with sensitivity and compassion, leading us to make choices in our attitudes, lifestyles and the way we relate to ourselves, to the others and to the entire creation. Therefore, we have decided to empower our students to build peace from their/our own trenches, every single day, with our classmates, with our teachers and in our families, so that’s why our Kid’s Guernica pretends to be a puzzle with only one white piece that stands for an invitation to complete PEACE, starting with a self peaceful, but not passive, attitude.

The canvas was made in 108 sections, so all Elementary Class 2006-2012 had his/her own piece where to express his/her own idea of peace, we also had a piece for each teacher, principal and secretary that have been in touch with these students during this school year, to show the compromise we all made to live practicing peace everyday in every moment of our life.

Even though every single piece is different, they all represent our own concept of peace, we talked about situations in our life that require a peaceful attitude from us, what we can do to help promote peace (even students are only 11 or 12 years old), and also about how the courageous act of living the peace in our daily life can help others, how imagination can be used to create improvement.

We used only crayons to paint, so it was really simple and accessible, finally we ironed the canvas to make it easier to transport or move, we even came up with extraordinary ideas from the Sacred Heart Society, so probably this work will be traveling around the world to invite more people to join and complete our puzzle.

We did the big opening of the art piece last May 17th, 2012 during a mass we at Mater usually celebrate, “life mass” in which students give thanks to their parents for the great gift of life.

The parents were fascinated with the final mural, they took lots of pictures of it, the students were so proud of themselves and of course we are extremely proud of them, their potential and their self confidence on how they are an important part of the change they want to experience.

We all loved what the students themselves decided to say on the big opening:

“We, the students from 6th grade would like to show you a mural, a mural we been working very hard, a mural we put our heart into, a mural that means more than just canvases for us.

This mural is about one thing: peace.

Probably for you I might be just a simple girl, but I believe Peace is more than just a word, for me peace means action, that’s what peace is about, that a single person can make a change, if one person can make a change, imagine what billions of people could do.
If we all got together nothing could stop us.
So I invite you to be part of the change, to make something important, to help, and make peace.”

The effort we put in it, including teachers, coordinators, the principal, and everyone who supported us, is an effort that you should appreciate, because we want to express our ideas in this mural. Actually, we live in a situation of violence, the citizens from Monterrey should cooperate to make peace, we, the students of 6th grade cooperated a little bit, we need to do more. What will you do?”

When we read what this mural meant for the students we knew it was definitely worth it.

Kids' Guernica at Toyono Nursery School in Japan

All the children of Toyono Nursery School in Neyagawa City, Japan created a Kids’ Guernica peace painting on the theme of “Peace and Ties". 74 nursery kids participated in this project and mainly six–year-old kids painted it. It took ten months to complete it from June to March.
“It was a fan to paint with my friends and seeing how the painting was changing. I enjoyed finishing a huge painting by hands.” Six-year-old boy

Kids' Guernica Collage in Onagawa, Japan

Nobinobi kids and children in Onagawa completed a collage for Kids Guernica. Nobinobi Kids is a volunteer group founded in Kanangawa for supporting children living in stricken areas of the catastrophic earthquake on 3.11 last year. Children from the age of seven to twelve participated in this art project. All of them suffered from the disaster. We asked them to paint and cut various shapes to create a beach scene. This art work consists of three parts. At the bottom of the painting, they drew the sea of Onagawa before the disaster. The middle parts shows their self-portraits. We took photos of their faces and printed them out in black and white. Then, they colored their photos by themselves. We hope everyone who see this art work can realize that children in the stricken areas are not sad now and they are trying to overcome their hard experience to enjoy their life again.
